Part One Surface distortion Stage 1 Research

I have decided to look at a couple of the recommended artists from the coursework at first so that I can get an idea of the sort of work that is or has been done in distorting surfaces.  I have looked at each of the artists mentioned and have chosen those whose work appeals to me.  I then intend to search out other artists who work in this field.

Mathias Bengtsson

Is a Danish born designer who studied furniture design at Danish Design School then moving to London and graduated from the Royal College of Art.  He works with industrial materials and processes.  Some of his pieces are in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art New York, the Contemporary Art Museum, Houston, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and Manchester Art Gallery.  His work has been shown in both fine art and design contexts.  He is best known for his work that adapts the conventional forms of seating and furniture into new areas.  All of his work is functional.

His Slice series was the combination of laser cutting techniques with handwork.  This was first produced in plywood and then he used the same process in aluminium.

I like the work of Mathias Bengtsson particularly because of his use of different materials.  I also like the fact that his pieces can look simple but are in fact quite complex.

I think looking at his work is relevant and may influence my work in a way of keeping an outline and an idea simple but using the texture to show off a piece.

Jule Waibel

Jule Waibel is a German designer based in London and Stuttgart.  She has a studio in London where she works on unfolded projects and commissions.  Her work is represented in interior design, fashion, installation and performance.  Folding is done manly by hand but sometimes with the help of a pleating factory.

The dress, umbrella and bag are made from tyvek which is a synthetic fabric.  They are collapsible structures which Jule makes using the origami technique.  These were part of here thesis project in 2013.  The dress changes shape according to movement.

Cones is a series of folded seats.  They are made from pure woolen felt shaped using heated steam.  The seats are both ornamental and comfortable and contour to the body.

I like Jule Waibel's work because of the attractiveness of the surfaces which look very tactile.  I like that the pieces change dependent on movement and are playful.

I think the techniques used are very relevant to this course in relation to changing a surfaces structure.  I think the folding and pleating is something I would like to experiment with and see how far I can take the techniques.  It will be interesting to see how different materials react when folded and to find out methods for keeping their shape.

Yuh Okano

Yuh Okano creates three dimensional forms with highly textured surfaces.  Metal disks and glass beads are used to achieve textured surfaces to polyester or silk fabric.

Yuh Okano established a textile company Textilesyuh through which she sells scarves, accessories and bags that all have highly textured surfaces.  She also does art installations inspirations being taken from nature particularly the ocean.

I like this work because although it is highly textured it is also very delicate.  I think Yuh Okano's work could influence my work on this course in that I would like to try to create delicate textured surfaces that could be made into wearable art.

Richard Sweeney

Richard Sweeney attended Batley School of Art and Design where he did sculpture.  He then studied Three Dimensional Design at Manchester Metropolitan University.  There he concentrated on the hands-on manipulation of paper to create design models.  He developed these into sculptural pieces in their own right.  He uses experimental hands-on perspective to utilise prperties in often mundane materials to discover sculptural forms.

Polly Verity

Polly Verity is an artist based in Devon.  She sculpts with a wide range of media from crumpled forms to elaborate tessellations.  She creates miniature wire and paper sculptures using a structure of pure silver wife to make a skeleton which is then covered with fine paper like a skin.

Kristiina Lahde

Kristiina Lahde is an artist from Toronto, Canada.  She was nominated for the Sobey Art Award LongList 2013.  Her work is in the collection of the Canada Council Art Bank.

Kristiina aters and re-formats ordinary objects and materials through geometric re-organisation using measurement and patter.   She uses envelopes, newspapers, telephone books and measuring tapes/yard sticks.  These are manipulated to shift, expand and invert to transform them.

Her recent work is investigating tension and gravity.  To do this she looks at architecture and site.  By using geometric forms such as square, circle, cube and sphere she highlights the process of their making subjecting them to unusual situations to reveal their structure and collapse for their purpose.
